The 3 main places to study Danish part time in London are "Westminster University" by Oxford Circus tube, "Morely College" in Westminster Bridge Road and the "Danish Church" in Regents Park.
I have done my best to make sure the info here is accurate and helpful but please check it out for yourself rather than rely on what I have to say. At Westminster University you can take courses from beginner (grade 1) to almost degree level (grade 6). Classes take place Mon, Tues, Weds and Thursday depending on your grade. The 1st semester has started but if you still want to join, I very much doubt if it would be a problem. Call 020 7911 5000 ext 4901 for further details. Alternately you can join in semester 2 for which enrolement takes place Jan 2008 - Again, full details are on the website. Best to ring them and check if you are in any doubt. http://www.wmin.ac.uk... Click here for further information http://www.wmin.ac.uk... Click here to find out about the various grades on offer http://www.wmin.ac.uk... Click here to find out about the fees http://www.wmin.ac.uk... Click here for the timetables http://www.wmin.ac.uk... The Head of Languages for the entire university is Ms Marianne Sharp who just so happens to be Danish herself. You can call her for advice on 020 7911 5000 - Please mention that Mike from "Danish Language Meetup" highly recommended her as a teacher and the university's evening courses and says "Hej" There is a well thought-out structure to the courses at Westminster. At all levels, you take short internal exams twice a year and in summer you also do a written project and give an oral presentation. This sounds a bit daunting but everyone enters into the spirit of things and the oral presentations are usually great fun. You get awarded nationally recognised credits for passing these exams (CATS) which can be used against degree courses at Westminster or elsewhere. -------------------------------------- At "Morley College" they offer 3 beginner and intermediate level classes. It is less structured and there are no exams. The course tutor is Helle Ajmone-Marsan who is very good indeed. Again, please mention my name and Meetup if you speak to her. You can get general information here. http://www.morleycoll... and read here about Danish lessons http://www.morleycoll... Although the classes at Morley appear at first a lot cheaper than at Westminster, please note that the prices quoted are just for one term. There are 3 terms in all and they are far shorter terms than the semesters at Westminster. -------------------------------------- There are also various levels of tuition for both adults and children at the "Danish Church" in Regents Park ... Beginners, Advanced and also a literature class. Classes take place on both Wednesdays and Saturdays. DEN DANSKE KIRKE 4 St. Katharineīs Precinct Regentīs Park, NW1 4HH tel. 020 7935 7584 fax. 0207487 4029 Bus: C2 Hoppa goes from Oxford Circus to the church's back entrance in Albany Street. http://www.danskekirk... Please note that for insurance reasons they can only accept enrolment from persons who are members of The Danish Church in London; It is sufficient if someone in your household is a member. If you contact the church, it would be nice if you could mention "Danish Language Meetup" when you call. For completeness sake here also is the main church website. http://www.danskekirk... -------------------------------------- Finally, should your budget stretch to it, I can add that Helle, the teacher from Morley College offers private tuition either at your home or your office or at her lovely house in Muswell Hill. This can be "one-to-one" or in pairs or in very small groups. Fees vary according to what and where it is required. They start from about 40 pounds for a 90 minute session (which can be shared if there is more than one student.) This may sound expensive but remember that your progress will be far, far, far quicker here than in a class with 15-20 others, so you will need a lot fewer lessons to achieve the same standard. It has the added advantage of being far more flexible too. With the Westminster evening classes you usually end up paying for the whole year up front. Many students find they don't like the classes, it's too hard for them. They get discouraged and drop out after a few weeks or months. They have lost (in Westminster's case) a massive 265 pounds and have had maybe 4-5 lessons. Additionally, if you are sick or on holiday or have personal commitments that prevent you attending one evening, the evening classes go on without you. You lose money and get frustrated and then somehow have to catch up. With private lessons, provided you have let Helle know in advance, you do not have to pay. The class is re-arranged. You don't get left behind or get discouraged. If you have never had a proper Danish lesson, I would strongly recommend that you try a couple of sessions with Helle before you commit yourself to a year long evening course. Helle's home number is 020-8883 5471 - Say that her students Mike, Allan and Shirin, who are all from Danish Meetup have highly recommended her. She is a busy lady, so please leave a message if you get the ansafone. Your call will be promptly returned. Classes can be during the day, in your office at lunchtime or in the evening. -------------------------------------- Finally, if all else fails or you don't the have time or the money or the stick-at-ability for classes, please check out the section of this message board called "Danish Links" - There you will find several links to organisations offering books, tapes, CD's, DVD's CD-ROM's etc etc all geared to helping you speak perfect Danish. New member Duane has asked about Danish Summer schools.
These are sometimes offered by the University of Westminster, Morely College and the Danish church in Regents Park but it depends of course on what demand there is, at the various levels and whether a teacher is available. If anyone has any further information about Summer schools can they please post a message here. For my part, I can say that many of this year's regular Danish classes at Westminster Uni were cancelled as the teacher was not well. I suspect that if she is better it will probably mean that we are offered free Summer school places during June and July. If this is the case, I am sure new (paying) students would probably be very welcome. At the time of writing though our teacher is still not very well, so it is far too early to say with any certainty. Mike Starr |
